Many know me as Sonja, Mrs. Montiel, or Coach. Oh, and there was one student who called me her "college fairy godmother"...that was cool.
I am so grateful to have found my life purpose serving young people as they find their path and place in the world. My two decades of college admissions experience came from many sides of the desk as an admission counselor for a large public university, a college counselor for a small private prep school, and now a private college counselor helping students and their families worldwide.
My most rewarding experience was recently, when it was my turn to support my daughter plan for options after high school! I quickly found out how challenging it was being in a parental role, and to a student who was considered middle of the road. Through trial and error, I found a rhythm that kept my daughter at the center of her planning process. Don’t get me wrong...we had road blocks and there were times where I wondered if anything was going to happen after graduation. Yet, I remained patient and kept my pace steady reminding myself that I needed to learn more about what makes my daughter “tick”. As a result of the methods I used within my own family, we celebrated her 7 out of 8 acceptances with over $85,000 in scholarships for half her colleges! Not bad for middle of the road. Now she is embracing adulthood while I enjoy being on the sidelines cheering her on.
Let me teach you and your teens how to plan for options after high school in a way that creates confidence, pride, and certainty. It's time for families and students to take control of the college admission planning experience in a way that's positive and within your budget. I'm going to give you tools that will be used throughout your teens’ adult lives that will be keeping you engaged with one another for a lifetime.
With character, inspiration and grit,
Sonja
